People are dying... hahaha

If you needed any more proof that the Conservative government of Canada is just a larger, more heartless version of the one that spent about 8 years in power here in Ontario, check out this story.
The Ontario PCs made drastic cuts to the province's water inspection safeguards and people died in the famous Walkerton tragedy. Not to be outdone, Prime Minister Harper, with only a minority government, slashed and burned Canada's Food Inspection Agency, and it comes as no shock that 17 Canadians have died as a result of the Listeria disaster.
It was interesting to read at the end of the article that even the Canadian Medical Association has "blasted the Harper government for undermining public health safeguards."
I'm sure that this will be on Canadians minds on October 14th.

  • I love the opposition parties that boohoo and call for resignations everytime somebody says something stupid.

"hay man we can't have pplz with bad sense of humour to run this country lol"

Personally i think the line "death by a thousand cold cuts" is funny. Is it funny that people died to a disease? no. Is it a funny pun? yes.

I mean the majority of jokes ever made are funny because they are inappropriate.

Here's one for example that won some poll or something as the funniest joke:

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed.

The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?".

The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

Is cardiac arrest funny? Is shooting people funny? No, these are horrible travesties! This joke cannot be funny.

  • The previous commentator should understand this cabinet minister not only failed in his responsibility to protect people and Canadians, he was joking about it.

Excusing of it just stinks of blind partisanship.

  • In all fairness to Darcy, I have to admit that I nearly fell off my chair laughing about the Dave Easter joke.

I wish Mr. Easter nothing but good health and a long life, but frankly it was not only funny, but a compliment to the effective job he is doing as agriculture critic.

Just the same, given the gravity of the situation, it'shardly a laughing matter. I don't know if it's so serious that he should be made to resign over it, aftrer all, everybody makes mistakes, and he has appologized for the remarks.

I suppose the title is a bit misleading, but I wrote this post to draw attention to the role that the government has played in this tragedy. Their mistakes have cost lives, which is cause for them to be removed from office.

  • Yeah, if people want to look at what the tories did regarding health monitoring, and can prove attribution of some sorts to how that resulted in bacteria in the equipment (was there actually a change in practice that resulted in it going undetected? Or was it equally probable under the old guard? Sometimes shit happens no matter how tight your regs are), then I'm all ears.

Making bad jokes is not grounds for dismissal or frankly even reprimand (unless you become like the guy in the show "the office"). And I say this for any party.

I probably won't even vote for the tories so calling it partisan is kind of laughable. I only come off as right wing because the libs and their ilk have far more stupid ideas than the cons do.

  • Ah, Fishman! Relax. Darcy likes to depict himself in a wifebeater playing a guitar.

  • LOL

Thanks Mound. Darcy and I are old friends, from undergrad. His style of dress hasn't changed much since then, and I pray it never will! This isn't the first political discussion we've had, and it won't be the last!

    Not much is "gnu" (haha)

Articling is keeping me busy as Hell, so I don't get the chance to blog as much as I'd like to these days, but I do occasionally check out my fav blogs for a quick read.

I hope things are going well for you over there on the West Coast!
